The American Society of Gene Therapy (ASGT) is the largest medical professional organization representing researchers and scientists dedicated to discovering new gene therapies. ASGT was established in 1996, and has grown to close to 3,000 members from around the world. ASGT is committed to:
- promoting and fostering the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas related to gene therapy;
- encouraging the general field of research involving gene therapy; and
- promoting professional and public education in all areas of gene therapy.
The ASGT 7th Annual Meeting will begin on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, and continue through Sunday, June 6, 2004. Exhibits will be open Thursday, June 3, 2004, through Saturday, June 5, 2004.
Clinical gene transfer has become more and more complex due to ongoing developments in the fields of gene therapy itself, together with bioethics, research integrity, and financial conflicts, as well as new federal mandates, regulations and guidelines. This meeting will provide an educational forum for scientists and clinicians to expand their knowledge about the broad developments in these fields.
The goals of ASGT are to engage in scientific and educational activities in order to promote and foster the exchange of information and ideas relating to gene therapy, to encourage the general field of research involving gene therapy, and to promote professional and public education in all areas of gene therapy. The ASGT 7th Annual Meeting will serve as a comprehensive forum to achieve these goals.
At the conclusion of the activity, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss key aspects of the current laboratory and/or clinical research in gene therapy.
- Demonstrate knowledge of methods being used by gene therapy researchers and practitioners.
- Describe one or more stimulating new areas of inquiry in the area of gene therapy.
- Demonstrate familiarity with federal regulations and guidelines for clinical gene transfer studies.

The 7th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy will offer a variety of session types. The following descriptions are offered to assist organizers and speakers in coordinating their individual sessions based on the expectations of the President and Planning Committee. (Wednesday only)
- The Education Sessions provide the ABCs of a specific topic and are geared toward individuals with littleknowledge about the topic who want a basic overview.
- The education sessions start with basics and cover broad instructions about specific topics.
- The education sessions are not laboratory presentations.
- The Society’s Education Committee develops the content of the education program.
- Workshops are mid-size didactic presentations with moderated question and answer periods at the end.
- Workshops cover practical applications of gene therapy and vector development.
- Workshops consist of 5 to 6 speakers who each give
10-minute talks.
- The Society’s committees recommend topics and suggested speakers for the workshops.
- Scientific Symposia are large, didactic sessions where 3 to 4 speakers each provide an in-depth talk on their specific body of work.
- Symposia are designed to have a broad appeal (e.g. cancer, hematopoiesis, infectious diseases, etc).

(Ticketed Sessions)
- These lunches are informal roundtable discussions with leaders in the field of gene therapy.
ASGT provides a select number of industry partners the opportunity to host symposia during the Annual Meeting, based on approval of individual program proposals. These symposia provide a venue for identifying and discussing new trends and discoveries in the field of gene therapy.
