Leadership Position Descriptions


ASGCT President

The President's term is the third year of a three year cycle, and begins after serving for a year as Vice-President and a year as the President-Elect. After serving as President, the individual will then serve for a five year term on the ASGCT Advisory Council.

The President of ASGCT plays many roles as the chief elected officer of the Society. The various roles include:

  • The President is the chairperson of the Board of Directors and thus presides at the ASGCT Board meetings and teleconferences, the Society's annual business meeting, and all general Society meetings.
    • As the chairperson of the Board of Directors, the President, with the Society's Executive Director, drafts agendas for the Board meetings and teleconferences.
  • The President is an ex officio member of all of the Society's committees, except the Nominating Committee.
    • As an ex officio member, the President may, but is not obligated, to attend any of the various committee meetings, other than meetings of the Nominating Committee.
  • The President is the chairperson of the Finance Committee.
  • The President, with the approval of the Board of Directors, has the power to appoint special committees, such as a Strategic Planning Committee or a Website Content Committee.
  • The President, with the approval of the Board of Directors, has the power to appoint an interim Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Therapy, as necessary.

In conjunction with the roles outlined above, the President is charged with completing multiple vital tasks throughout his/her one year term. Below is an outline of the responsibilities of the President of ASGCT:

  • Annual Business Meeting of the Society: The term of each President begins and ends at the Annual Business Meeting. The President is required to attend the Meeting beginning his/her term and to preside over the meeting ending his/her term.
  • Board Meetings: The ASGCT Board meets monthly via teleconference and twice at each Annual Meeting. The President is charged with presiding over the monthly teleconferences as well as the in-person Board meetings at the Annual Meeting. Prior to the Board Meetings, the President and Executive Director work in conjunction to form the meeting agendas.
  • Nominating Committee: The President is charged with forming the ASGCT Nominating Committee. The committee appointment process takes place in mid-September. Once the committee is formed, the President's involvement in the nomination process is complete.
  • Finance Committee: As chairperson of the Finance Committee, the President is charged with presiding over the quarterly teleconferences and working with the Executive Director to prepare the agendas. The Finance Committee's primary duties are to review the ASGCT financials and oversee the annual audit.
  • Program Committee/Annual Meeting Scientific Content: The President, along with the two program co-chairs, has primary control over the scientific content of the ASGCT Annual Meetings. The President and program co-chairs meet about three times during the year via teleconference to discuss the scientific content of the Annual Meeting and to review the symposia suggestions submitted by each of the ASGCT scientific committees. In addition, the President invites the plenary speakers for the Annual Meeting (George Stamatoyannopoulos Lecture and the Presidential Symposium).
  • Annual Meeting Abstracts: While the Secretary of the Society is the official Abstract Chair, the President takes part in confirming the abstract categories and setting the abstract submission timeline. In addition, the President selects, with the Secretary and several coordinating reviewers, the Top Abstracts, Clinical Trials Abstracts, and Newsworthy Abstracts.
  • Code of Ethics and Legal Considerations: At the beginning of the term of each President, the President signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as the President of ASGCT. In addition, as President and a member of the Board of Directors, the President has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Other Items: Throughout the term of each President, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. Many of these items and the tasks associated with them are accomplished by staff with the input of the President.

ASGCT President-Elect

The President- Elect's term is the second year of a three year cycle to become the President of ASGCT. At the end of a term as President-Elect, the President-Elect becomes the President of ASGCT. After the serving as President, the individual will then serve for a five year term on the ASGCT Advisory Council. The President-Elect's primary role is to assist the ASGCT President in the implementation of programs and initiatives undertaken by the President, the Board of Directors and the Society. In addition to assisting in the implementation of the initiative of the Society, the President-Elect's role includes:

  • The President-Elect is a member of the Board of Directors and performs the duties of the President in the absence or incapacity of the President.
  • The President-Elect is an ex officio member of all of the Society's committees, except the Nominating Committee.
    • As an ex officio member, the President-Elect may, but is not obligated, to attend any of the various committee meetings, other than meetings with the Nominating Committee.
  • The President-Elect is a member of the Finance Committee.

In conjunction with the roles outlined above, the President-Elect is charged with completing vital tasks throughout his/her one year term. Below is an outline of the responsibilities of the President-Elect of ASGCT:

  • ASGCT Committee Appointments: The President-Elect is charged with appointing all committee members to the ASGCT committees, excluding the Nominating Committee.
  • Finance Committee: The President-Elect is a member of the Finance Committee and is required to attend quarterly teleconferences to review the ASGCT financials and oversee the annual audit.
  • Code of Ethics: At the beginning of the term of each President-Elect, the President-Elect signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as the President-Elect of ASGCT. In addition, as President-Elect and a member of the Board of Directors, the President-Elect has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Other Items: Throughout the term of each President-Elect, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. ASGCT Vice President

The Vice President's term is the first year of a three year cycle to become the President of ASGCT. At the end of a term as Vice President, the Vice President becomes the President-Elect, and at the end of the term as President-Elect, the President-Elect becomes the President of ASGCT. After the serving as President, the individual serves for a five year term on the ASGCT Advisory Council. The Vice President's primary role is to assist the ASGCT President and President-Elect in the implementation of programs and initiatives undertaken by the President, the Board of Directors and the Society. In addition to assisting in the implementation of the initiative of the Society, the President-Elect's role includes:

  • Website Editor: The Vice President is the official Website Editor of the ASGCT website (www.asgct.org). In this role, the Vice President typically holds monthly calls with the Executive Director to discuss updates and changes to the website. In addition, the Vice President is usually asked to give website updates to the Board of Directors during the monthly Board teleconferences.
  • Code of Ethics: At the beginning of the term of each Vice President, the Vice President signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as the Vice President of ASGCT. In addition, as Vice-President and a member of the Board of Directors, the Vice President has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Other Items: Throughout the term of each Vice President, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. Many of these items and the tasks associated with them are accomplished by staff with the input of the ASGCT officers. ASGCT Secretary

The Secretary's term is a three years term. The Secretary of the Society has many roles, including:

  • The Secretary is a member of the Board of Directors.
  • The Secretary is the primary record keeper of ASGCT.
    • While the Secretary serves as the primary record keeper, these duties are delegated to ASGCT staff, including filing the Articles of Incorporation, retaining the minutes of all Board and Committee meetings, etc.
  • The Secretary serves as the chair of the abstract review committees.
  • The Secretary serves on the Finance Committee.

In conjunction with the roles outlined above, the Secretary is charged with completing vital tasks throughout his/her three year term. Below is an outline of the responsibilities of the Secretary of ASGCT:

  • Annual Business Meeting of the Society: The 3-year term of each Secretary begins and ends at an Annual Business Meeting. The Secretary is required to present on the membership statistics, Annual Meeting abstract submissions, and Annual Meeting registration statistics at the Annual Business Meeting.
  • Board Meetings: The ASGCT Board meets monthly via teleconference and twice at each Annual Meeting. The Secretary, as the official record keeper of the Society, is required to attend the meetings.
  • Finance Committee: The Secretary is a member of the Finance Committee and is required to attend quarterly teleconferences to review the ASGCT financials and oversee the annual audit.
  • Abstract Review: The Secretary is the abstract review chair and therefore oversees the annual abstract review process.
  • Membership: According to the Bylaws of the Society, the Secretary receives the requests for Emeritus Membership from the members at large. The Secretary is thus charged with presenting these requests to the Board for their approval.
  • Code of Ethics: At the beginning of the term of each Secretary, the Secretary signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as the Secretary of ASGCT. In addition, as Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors, the Secretary has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Other Items: Throughout each year of the Secretary's term, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. Many of these items and the tasks associated with them are accomplished by staff with the input of the ASGCT officers. ASGCT Treasurer

The Treasurer's term is a three year term. The Treasurer of the Society has many roles, including:

  • The Treasurer is a member of the Board of Directors.
  • The Treasurer is the chief financial elected official for the Society's funds.
  • The Treasurer serves on the Finance Committee.

In conjunction with the roles outlined above, the Treasurer is charged with completing vital tasks throughout his/her three year term. Below is an outline of the responsibilities of the Treasurer of ASGCT:

  • Annual Business Meeting of the Society: The 3-year term of each Treasurer begins and ends at an Annual Business Meeting. The Treasurer is required to present on the financial health of the Society at the Annual Business Meeting. The Executive Director and the Treasurer work in conjunction to formulate the financial presentation.
  • Board Meetings: The ASGCT Board meets monthly via teleconference and twice at each Annual Meeting. The Treasurer, as the primary financial elected officer, is required to attend the meetings.
  • Finance Committee: The Treasurer is a member of the Finance Committee and is required to attend quarterly teleconferences to review the ASGCT financials and oversee the annual audit.
  • ASGCT Financials: According to the Bylaws of the Society, the Treasurer is in direct charge of the ASGCT funds and is responsible for management of revenues and payment obligations of the Society. The Treasurer is also in charge of co-signing checks over $1,000. The Executive Director, the Treasurer, and the Finance Committee work in conjunction to develop the annual budget for the Society.
  • Code of Ethics: At the beginning of the term of each Treasurer, the Treasurer signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as the Treasurer of ASGCT. In addition, as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors, the Treasurer has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Other Items: Throughout each year of the Treasurer's term, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. ASGCT Board Member

A Board Member's term is a three year term. The roles and responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors are closely tied to the purpose and mission of the Board as an entity. The ASGCT Board's mission is a follows:

  • The Board of Directors is the administrative body of the Society and as such is charged with managing the affairs of the Society.
    • The bulk of the administrative duties of the Board of Directors are accomplished during the monthly Board teleconferences and two in person meetings. Attendance at the Board meetings is required to ensure a quorum exists.
    • The Board of Directors receives monthly updates from the Executive Office pertaining to the affairs of the Society. The Board Reports contain information on all of the administrative affairs of the Society throughout the previous month.
  • The Board of Directors decides on questions of policy, receives reports of committees and approves or disapproves their recommendations.
  • The Board of Directors provides advice to the President and President-Elect in regard to committee and chairperson appointments.
  • The Board of Directors acts as a Board of Censors and Grievance Committee should any such issues arise in the Society.
  • At the beginning of year of the term of each Board member, the Board member signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as a member of the Board of Directors of ASGCT. In addition, a member of the Board of Directors, each Director has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Throughout each year of a Board member's term, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. Many of these items and the tasks associated with them are accomplished by staff with the input of the ASGCT officers and the Board of Directors. ASGCT Advisory Council Member

An Advisory Council Member's term is a five year term. The roles and responsibilities of a member of the Advisory Council are closely tied to the purpose and mission of the Advisory Council as an entity. The ASGCT Advisory Council's mission is a follows:

  • The Advisory Council primary purpose is to advise the President and the Board of Directors concerning the long range development and policies of the Society and other actions and activities which the Advisory Council determines to be in the best interests of the Society.
  • The Advisory Council makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the awards of the Society, the establishment of orations, or other actions of a distinguishing nature.
    • The Advisory Council currently recommends to the Board of Directors the winners of both the ASGCT Outstanding Achievement Award Winner and the Outstanding New Investigator Award Winners.
    • The selection of the awards requires about 6 hours dedicated to conference calls with the committee and reviewing the materials for the awards throughout the year - three hours per award selection process. The Outstanding Achievement Award is selected in October of each year and the Outstanding New Investigator Awards are selected in February of each year.
  • The Advisory Council also performs other functions as may be requested from time to time by the President and Board of Directors, and reports to the Board of Directors as deemed necessary by the President.
  • The Chair of the ASGCT Advisory Council sits as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors. As such, the Chair attends the monthly Board teleconferences to give any needed reports, provide feedback to the Board, and relay any messages to the Advisory Council.
  • In addition to teleconferences during the year, the Advisory Council meets during the ASGCT Annual Meeting.
  • The Advisory Council consists of five at-large members who are ASGCT Active Members, each of whom are elected by the members of the Society for one term of five years and the five immediately preceding past-Presidents of the Society, each of whom shall serve on the Advisory Council for one five year term, which commences immediately upon the expiration of the past-President's previous term as President.
  • At the beginning of each year of the term of each member of the Advisory Council, each member of the Council signs a Code of Ethics affirming a commitment to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of his/her responsibilities as a member of the ASGCT Advisory Council. In addition, as a member of the Advisory Council, each member has a legal duty of care, loyalty and obedience to the Society, the Society's goals, and the Society's mission statement.
  • Throughout each year of an Advisory Council member's term, there will be a membership renewal & recruitment drive, a sponsor & exhibitor recruitment effort, strategic planning efforts, conference grants, and media requests. Many of these items and the tasks associated with them are accomplished by staff with the input of the ASGCT officers and the Board of Directors.
